Hydrothermal liquefaction of the microalga was carried out. A response surface methodology was used to explore the effect of reaction temperature, retention time, initial total solids, and biomass composition, as well as their interactions, on the yield and quality of the resultant biocrude. The maximum biocrude yield was obtained between 315–325 °C and 40–45 min, at lipid ratio and initial total solids of 0.65 and 15 %, respectively. Under these conditions, the higher heating value was 35 MJ/kg, the total acid number was 70 mg KOH/g and the carbon, nitrogen and oxygen contents were 72 %, 3.7 % and 13 %, respectively.
