Comparative study of the mercury fluxes through the phytoplankton and detritivorous food webs in a tropical estuary

Con el objeto de contribuir al conocimiento de los procesos de bioacumulación y biomagnificación de metales en estuarios tropicales, se tomó la bahía de Cartagena como modelo del flujo de mercurio en las redes tróficas. Se realizaron cinco muestreos en cinco estaciones y se recolectaron muestras de sedimentos, seston, plancton y peces. A todas las muestras se les determinó la concentración de mercurio total (HgT) y metil mercurio (MeHg). Los resultados sugieren que incluso a bajas concentraciones de HgT en sedimentos (0,18 ± 0,01 μg/gp.s), y en seston (0,16 ± 0,002 μg/gp.s), el flujo de mercurio se da en todos los niveles tróficos de los organismos muestreados. Se encontró una concentración de HgT en plancton de 0,32 ± 0,005 μg/gp.s; en peces detritívoros de 0,05 ± 0,018 μg/gp.s, en peces planctívoros de 0,26 ± 0,037 μg/gp.s; en peces omnívoros de 0,13 ± 0,029 μg/gp.s; en peces carnívoros de primer orden de 0,13 ± 0,014 μg/gp.s; en peces carnívoros segundo orden de 0,17 ± 0,024 μg/gp.s; en peces carnívoro de tercer orden de 0,28 ± 0,027 μg/gp.s. El Factor de Bioacumulación (FBA) muestra, cómo el principal productor primario del ecosistema (fitoplancton) bioacumula activamente el mercurio total y el metil mercurio. El mismo patrón se observa para las especies con hábitos planctívoros. Esto sugiere que el plancton es un eslabón importante para la transferencia de mercurio total y metil mercurio en las redes tróficas del ecosistema, en especial las redes tróficas que se basan en el plancton. La estructura de las redes tróficas permite demostrar que la magnitud del proceso de magnificación varía de acuerdo a la fuente energética primaria de los individuos. Se encontró que el proceso de magnificación es mayor en la red trófica detrítica (FWMF de 240,94) que en la red trófica planctónica (FWMF de 4,40). En otras palabras la capacidad de magnificar de la red trófica detrítica es 55 veces mayor que la capacidad de magnificar que la red trófica planctónica. / Abstract. In order to contribute to the knowledge of the metal bioaccumulation and biomagnification processes in tropical estuaries, the mercury fluxes through the food webs were measured taking Cartagena Bay as a model. Five main field samples in five stations were conducted where sediments, seston, plankton, and fishes were collected. Total mercury (HgT) and methyl mercury (MeHg) concentration was determined to these samples. The results suggested that even thought there were low HgT concentrations in sediments (0,18 ± 0,01 μg/gp.s), and in seston (0,16 ± 0,002 μg/gp.s), the mercury flux occurs in all trophic levels of the organisms sampled. It was found a HgT concentration in plankton of 0,32 ± 0,005 μg/gp.s, in detritivorous fishes of 0,05 ± 0,018 μg/gp.s, in planktivorous fishes of 0,26 ± 0,037 μg/gp.s; in omnivorous fishes of 0,13 ± 0,029 μg/gp.s; in first order carnivorous fishes of 0,13 ± 0,014 μg/gp.s; in second order carnivorous fishes of 0,17 ± 0,024 μg/gp.s; and in third order carnivorous fishes of 0,28 ± 0,027 μg/gp.s. The bioaccumulation factor (BAF) shows that the main primary producer of the ecosystem (phytoplankton) actively bioaccumulates the total mercury and the methyl mercury. The same pattern is observed for the species with plantivorous habits. This suggests that plankton is an important link for the transfer of total mercury and methyl mercury in the food webs of the ecosystem, specially the plankton based food webs. The structures of the trophic webs allow showing that the strength of the magnification process changes accordingly to the origin of the primary producer source of energy of each species. It was found that the magnification process was higher in the detritic food web (FWMF of 240,94) than in the planktonic food web (FWMF of 4,40).
