Thermotropic nematic liquid crystals in contact with surfaces at the nanoscale were studied by means of beyond equilibrium thermodynamics and computational simulations. In particular, nanoparticles of different geometries suspended in nematic liquid crystals were studied. For this purpose, biaxial systems, thermal fluctuations, confi nement effects and hydrodynamic fields were taken into account.
