Mechanical characterization and structural modeling of a buckling restrained braces used as a passive energy dissipator. part 1

La investigación está centrada en el diseño, fabricación, montaje y realización de ensayos cíclicos de cuatro (4) riostras de pandeo restringido modeladas a escala 1:4, elaboradas en el país. Las riostras están conformadas por un núcleo en platina de acero, una superficie aislante, mortero de relleno como material confinante y un perfil estructural tubular de acero como camisa de confinamiento. Se presenta el estado del arte de las diferentes técnicas de control de respuesta sísmica y se describen brevemente los sistemas estructurales más utilizados en la industria del acero, destacando los pórticos con arriostramientos de pandeo restringido, PAPR, (Buckling Restrained Braced Frames, en inglés) y se incluye una descripción detallada de las características y propiedades de este tipo de riostras (Buckling Restrained Braces, en inglés). Se presentan los requisitos de similitud para modelos a escala, así como las ventajas y limitaciones que se consideran para la fabricación de las probetas de laboratorio. El análisis de resultados se aborda en función de tres (3) temas de importancia como son las curvas fuerza-desplazamiento, la caracterización experimental de las riostras y su comportamiento general y funcionalidad. Se presenta la curva característica de los disipadores, los factores de ajuste de resistencia, la rigidez elástica y la capacidad de amortiguamiento. Finalmente, las conclusiones se enfocan en la metodología aplicada en el diseño de las riostras, el procedimiento experimental y el análisis de los resultados. Se incentiva el uso de esta tecnología para el escenario colombiano y se plantean algunas recomendaciones para posteriores investigaciones. / Abstract. The main purposes of this research are the design, manufacture, assembly and cyclic testing of four (4) 1:4 scale buckling restrained braces (BRB), built with local materials and labor. The braces consist of a configuration of steel plate core, an insulating surface, filling with mortar as confining material and hollow steel structural as a confinement sleeve First, the state of the art of the different techniques for seismic response control and brief description of the structural systems frequently used in the steel industry are presented in this document. Secondly, the characteristics, properties and description of the buckling restrained braces used in this investigation are detailed. Then, the similarity requirements as well as the advantages and limitations that are considered for the manufacture of the scaled tests specimens are explained. Next, the analysis results based on three (3) important issues: force-displacement curves, the mechanical characterization of the braces and their general behavior and functionality are showed andmdiscussed. Later, the characteristic curve of the dissipators, the adjustment strength factors, the elastic stiffness and the damping capacity are determined and studied. Finally, conclusions from the design methodology of the braces, the experimental procedure and analysis of results are presented. The use of this technology in Colombia is encouraged.
