Design of an algorithm for carrying out handoff procedures between UMTS cellular network and WIFI network (standard IEEE 802.11), and observation of quality of service of VOIP services

Este documento de tesis describe la necesidad, el funcionamiento y el desempeño de un algoritmo de handover (o handoff), para las redes heterogéneas, diferente a los utilizados en las redes homogéneas tradicionales, tomando como red heterogénea la que combina varias redes tecnológicamente diferentes. La necesidad de un nuevo método de handover surge en el escenario de las redes 4G donde los métodos tradicionales son insuficientes para obtener un desempeño óptimo. Por esta razón el algoritmo diseñado en esta investigación mide la calidad de servicio y, en la medida de lo posible, mejora esta calidad. Este algoritmo tiene dos instancias, una llamada MQoS donde se miden los parámetros de calidad de servicio y otra llamada MIQoS donde se miden y mejoran estos parámetros. Para evaluar su desempeño en la prestación de servicios VoIP se utilizó la herramienta J-sim para simular una red heterogénea la cual combina redes UMTS y Wi-Fi. Los resultados obtenidos con MIQoS y MQoS se compararon con los obtenidos en simulaciones de un algoritmo basado en la fuerza de la señal recibida (RSSI del inglés Received Signal Strength Indicator). La RSSI es un parámetro tradicionalmente utilizado para los procesos de handover en redes homogéneas. / Abstract. This thesis document describes the necessity, functioning and performance of a Handover (or handoff) algorithm for heterogeneous networks that are different from the methods used in the traditional homogeneous networks, where the term “heterogeneous networks” implies networks that combine two or more technologically different networks. The necessity of a new handover method comes with the 4G networks, where the traditional methods are not enough to obtain a good performance. For this reason, the designed algorithm measures Quality of Service (QoS) and improves it when possible. This algorithm has two instances; one of them is named MQoS that measures the QoS and the other is named MIQoS that measures and improves the QoS. We evaluated the providing VoIP services‟ performance by simulations of heterogeneous networks that combine UMTS and Wi-Fi networks. These simulations were made with the J-sim simulation tool and were compared against the Received-Signal-Strength-Indicator (RSSI) algorithms. The RSSI is a parameter that is traditionally used by homogeneous networks.Maestrí
