La estreptococosis es uno de los problemas sanitarios más importantes en la acuicultura mundial. En Colombia hasta el momento solo se ha logrado confirmar la presencia del S. agalactiae, causando importantes pérdidas en las explotaciones de tilapia. Su diagnóstico se basa en los signos clínicos, las lesiones histopatológicas y el aislamiento microbiológico; sin embargo, su identificación específica requiere de técnicas moleculares. La técnica de hibridación in situ permite no solo detectar específicamente la bacteria en los tejidos sino también observar los cambios histopatológicos en los tejidos del hospedero.
