Des bois dans les Maisons. Rôles du système social dans la forêt rurale des paysages des Coteaux de Gascogne (Sud-ouest de la France)

International audienceThe landscapes of South-Western France are dotted with many small woodlots that have important ecological, socioeconomic, and cultural functions for local communities. This articlepresents an interdisciplinary synthesis of work conducted over the last thirty years on these woodlots in the Atelier Pygar Zone (Pyrenees-Garonne). It focuses on the benefits of closelyassociating approaches of landscape ecology and human and social sciences to understand the current state and recent history of these woodlots and to help in designing landscape projectsadapted to local contexts. First, we present the specific ecological characteristics of the woodlots, which are distinguished by the rich diversity of ligneous species and their contribution tonumerous ecosystem services. However, these characteristics do not fully explain why these woodlots have been maintained in the landscapes studied whereas they tend to disappear fromagricultural landscapes in favour of larger forested areas. Ethnographic research provides a key to understanding this paradox by showing that the presence of woodlots in the Coteaux deGascogne was the result of strong social rules relating to the House Society system which favours the maintenance of woodland diversity close to farms while producing useful goods and services.The future of these woodlots is nevertheless uncertain given the changes in the current agricultural and forestry context. A better understanding of the links between agriculture andwoodlands, notably by introducing the concept of the "rural forest" could be an asset for the development of territories such as the Coteaux de Gascogne.Les paysages du Sud-Ouest de la France sont parsemés de nombreux petits bois qui ont des fonctions écologiques, socioéconomiques et culturelles importantes pour les sociétés locales. Cetarticle propose une synthèse interdisciplinaire de travaux conduits depuis une trentaine d’années sur ces petits bois dans la Zone Atelier Pygar (Pyrénées-Garonne). En particulier, ilillustre l’intérêt, pour comprendre l’état actuel et l’histoire récente de ces bois, et pour aider à penser des projets de paysage adaptés aux contextes locaux, d’associer étroitement desapproches d’écologie des paysages et de sciences humaines et sociales. Nous présentons dans un premier temps les particularités écologiques de ces bois, qui se distinguent par leur richesseélevée en espèces ligneuses ou leur contribution à de nombreux services écosystémiques. Cependant, ces particularités n’expliquent pas complètement que ces bois aient été maintenus enl’état dans les paysages étudiés, alors qu’ils tendent globalement à disparaître des paysages agricoles au profit de zones forestières plus vastes. Pour comprendre ce paradoxe, ce sontnotamment des travaux ethnographiques qui ont offert une clé d’explication en montrant que la présence de ces bois dans les coteaux de Gascogne répondait à des règles sociales fortes relativesau système à Maison qui favorise le maintien d’une diversité de bois dans la proximité directe des fermes tout en produisant des biens et des services utiles. L’avenir de ces bois est néanmoins incertain compte tenu des évolutions du contexte agricole et forestier. Une meilleure prise en considération des liens entre agriculture et bois, notamment par la mobilisation du concept de« forêt rurale », pourrait être un atout pour le développement de territoires comme celui des coteaux de Gascogne
