BACKGROUND: Assessing diastolic dysfunction is essential and should be part of every routine echocardiography examination. However, clinicians routinely observe lower mitral annular velocities by transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) under anesthesia than described by awake transthoracic echocardiography (TTE).
