Environment and/or trophic level are major factors, with freshwater/diadromous species generally requiring C18 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) whereas marine fish have a strict requirement for long chain PUFA, eicosapentaenoic, docosahexaenoic and arachidonic acids.
