This essay tackles the question of what international politics in general and the Cold War in particular meant to people in Britain and West Germany. The period of discussion is from the end of the Second World War into the late 1960s and from the beginnings of the nuclear arms race to the first signs of détente between the two superpowers. It highlights how protests against nuclear weapons were deeply embedded in the political cultures of the Cold War and how the cultures were produced. The key to understanding this oppositional politics of security consist of the specific memories of the Second World War: the memories of the bombing over Europe provide a template for understanding the Cold War as a constant pre-war situation
