The removal of different natural organic matter (NOM) components from boreal lake water was studied at ambient temperature (0.4–18.5 °C) in a full-scale drinking water treatment plant (DWTP). The specific aim was to compare the performance of granular activated carbon (GAC) filters containing different commercial carbons. Liquid chromatography with organic carbon detection (LC-OCD), fluorescence excitation and emission matrices (FEEM), and biodegradable dissolved organic carbon (BDOC) analyses showed that surface water NOM was dominated by humic substances (HS), had the highest fluorescence intensity at the region associated with fulvic acid-like NOM and contained, on average, 0.2 mg/L of BDOC.
