Objectives: To explore the processes involved in deciding to seek obesity surgery. Method: In-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine participants attending a specialist outpatient obesity clinic. The interviews were audio-taped, transcribed and analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Results: The results provide insights into the decision making process and highlight the role of defence mechanisms, a defining moment and the importance of hope. In particular, participants described in detail the negative experience of being an obese person and how they utilised defence mechanisms to cope with such negative experiences.
