Processes Involved in Losing Religious Faith Following Traumatic Events: A Narrative Analytic Study.

Objectives: This study examines two narrative accounts of the processes involved in losing religious and spiritual beliefs following traumatic life events. Design: A dual case study narrative analytic approach was used to examine participants’ meaning-making processes Method: Detailed semi-structured interviews were conducted with two (female) participants who had lost their religious faith following a traumatic life event which had occurred more than one year ago. Data were analysed using an adapted form of Me Adam’s (1993) Autobiographical Approach. Results: Participants discussed issues including moments of realisation, intellectual questioning, renegotiation of relationships and social identity, isolation, searching for meaning and finding new meaning. Conclusions: Implications for therapeutic practice are considered, as are recommendations for future research.&#xa0
