In atherosclerosis disease, macrophages present intra-plaque antigens in the form of peptides on major histocompatibility (MHC) class II molecules to T lymphocytes. Macrophages stimulated by low density lipoprotein (LDL) may present differential peptide profiles on MHC complex molecules resulting in an altered immune response.
