This study examines Puerto Rico’s role as a “bridge between the Americas” from the War of 1898 to the 1930s, and the consequences for inter-American relations and Puerto Rican national identity. Specifically, I address four central questions. First, how and why did U.S. policymakers incorporate Puerto Ricans into their foreign policy initiatives? Secondly, did the Puerto Rican presence during U.S. occupations further Washington’s goals of stability and democratization? How did interactions between Puerto Ricans and other Latin Americans contribute to, or militate against, transnational activism?
