The correlation between reading comprehension ability and speaking skill of the second grade students of SMAN 1 Kandangan

ABSTRACTKeywords: reading comprehension, speaking skillTeaching English in Indonesia was not easy because English is foreign language. Reading and speaking were part of skills that was taught in English teaching. By learning reading, the students can improve their vocabulary to speak English. This study was to investigate the relationship between reading comprehension ability and speaking skillof second grade students of SMAN 1 Kandangan.The sample of this study was 40 students of second grade of Science-4 at SMAN 1 Kandangan. This study used quantitative method using correlation design. To collect the data, the researcher asked speaking score from the teacher and conducted test for reading score. The instrument of reading test was adapted from book entitle Collection of National Test for SeniorHighSchoolby Tim Guru Teladan.The data was calculated using SPSS v20 the researcher found that the r value was in high level of correlation coefficient as much 0.758 while the r value was significant in .000 levels. It means the r value is below 0.01 and indicates both variables significant at the level of 0.01. The minimum score from reading test was 60 and the maximum score was 100. Meanwhile for the minimum score for speaking test was 70 and the maximum score was 90. The result of this study showed that there was positive relationship between reading comprehension abiltyand speaking skill.In the other words, the students who got high score in reading comprehension also have good speaking skill and the students who got the low score in reading comprehension also have low speaking skill.This study showed that the correlation between reading comprehension and speaking ability in high level. It means there was positive correlation between reading comprehension and speaking skill. For the future researcher is suggested to conduct the study in a longer time. It was because of the limited time in this study that the researcher did not conduct the speaking test, therefore, the future researcher should conduct the speaking test. For the teacher the researcher recommend that the teacher should give the interesting story in the text that make the student interested or more excited to learn reading.
