The Chandra X-ray Observatory is part of NASA's fleet of "Great Observatories" along with the Hubble Space Telescope, the Spitzer Space Telescope, and the now deorbited Compton Gamma Ray Observatory. The observatory was designed to detect x-ray emissions from some of the hottest regions of the galaxy including exploded stars, clusters of galaxies, and matter around black holes. One of the observatory's key scientific instruments is the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS), which is one of four primary and two focal plane instruments.
