Functional Outcome of Proximal Humerus Fracture Managed by Miros Technique in Elderly Patients: A Prospective study

INTRODUCTION: Elderly patients often have fractures of proximal humerus ,which may be difficult to manage in patients in poor general condition. Minimally Invasive Reduction Osteosynthesis (MIROS) is a new technique, which allows correction of angular displacements and stable fixation of frature fragments. AIM OF THE STUDY: To evaluate and analyse the Functional outcome of proximal humerus fractures managed by MIROS Technique in elderly patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective study of 20 elderly patients > 60 years of age group with closed proximal humerus fractures with less than 2 weeks of trauma was included and was treated by MIROS technique. Average age group of 70 years, with most of them had accidental fall. AO classification was used, with most of them have 11-A3 fracture type (45%). Early mobilisation was started immediately on post operative day 1. All cases were followed for a period of 18 to 24 months. RESULTS: About 95% of the fractures was united, with good functional outcome measured by constant score. Complications includes pin tract infection, malunion, persistent joint stiffness and with one case of non union. CONCLUSION: Though conserative management gives good union rate ,it fails to give a good functional outcome, due to lack of early mobilisation. With MIROS technique, early mobilisation is achieved with stable fixation and thereby resulted in good functional outcome
