A Comparative study of Platelet Rich Plasma Versus Conventional Dressing in Diabetic Foot Ulcer

Diabetic foot ulcers continue to pose significant global issue despite made in the management of diabetes. It causes major foot complications if they are not addressed properly. It needs multidisciplinary approach for its care. While several advancements has taken place in wound care management, platelet rich plasma promises to offer a new hope in its management, aiding in cellular and tissue regeneration. The purpose of the present study was to compare Platelet-Rich Plasma versus conventional dressing in the management of diabetic foot ulcers. OBJECTIVE: To assess the effects and advantages of platelet rich plasma therapy in management of diabetic foot ulcer patients admitted in GRH, Madurai. METHODOLOGY: A case group of 25 patients and control group of 25 patients were studied. Study group was treated with platelet rich plasma dressing and control group treated with normal saline dressing. Patients followed up for 6 weeks. The results were analysed in terms of reduction in size of wound, duration taken for wound Contraction. RESULTS: Area of reduction in wound size is more in study group compared to control Group. And also the duration taken for wound healing is short in study group than control group. The PRP group was found to be more effective in wound healing with fewer complications, less infection, exudates and pain. CONCLUSION: There have been considerable advances in the use of PRP in therapeutic processes in recent years in tissue regeneration therapy. PRP is powerful tool for the treatment of chronic wounds and very promising for diabetic foot wounds; PRP enables healing, and reduces amputation rates, infection and exudates
