The Mask and the Face: On Foregone Conclusions and Loving Understanding in The Brothers Karamazov

Í þessari ritgerð er Karamazovbræðurnir (1879–1880) eftir Fjodor Dostojevskí (1821– 1881) lesin undir áhrifum frá nýlegum hræringum innan svonefndrar post-krítíkur (e. post-critique) sem lítið hefur borið á hér á landi til þessa sem og í samhengi rússneskrar heimspekihefðar. Með hjálp hugsuða á borð við Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, Míkhaíl Bakhtín, Níkolaj Berdjajev og Lev Shestov er bókin skoðuð út frá því hvernig þekking og fagurfræði verka á einstakar persónur og leitast er við að varpa ljósi á performatívar og pragmatískar hliðar þekkingarinnar. Þetta er síðan sett í samhengi við rannsóknaraðferðir innan hugvísindanna, og bókmenntarannsókna sérstaklega, til að leggja grunn að þekkingarfræði sem byggist á virkri ást.This thesis provides a reading of The Brothers Karamazov (1879-1880) by Fyodor Dostoevsky (1821-1881) in the context of the Russian philosophical tradition as well as recent developments within post-critique which have not received attention in Iceland until now. With the help of thinkers like Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, Mikhail Bakhtin, Nikolay Berdyaev, and Lev Shestov, the novel is examined in relation to how knowledge and aesthetics influence its characters to shed a light on the pragmatic and performative aspects of knowledge. This is in turn put into the context of present methodologies within the Humanities in an attempt to develop an epistemology based on active love
