Most of the logistical problems associated with river sediment sampling canbe avoided when data derived from reservoir surveys are used to estimate sediment yields. However there are some difficulties in deriving sediment yields from reservoir volume changes: estimating the reservoir sediment trap efficiency, and the density of the sediment deposits. Means of determining these parameters and recommended procedures for establishin reservoir volume changes from survey date are described.
