The ability to model the association of heavy metals and phytoplankton within an estuarine system would further improve the understanding of the heavy metal budgets of such systems and the environmental effect. This review, carried out by an environmental scientist and a mathematical modeller at Hydraulics Research, Wallingford with specialist advice from two marine biologists, was undertaken to acquire a great understanding of the biological processes involved and to identify the main characteristics which would need to be modelled
