Exposure of the heart to ionising radiation even at low to moderate doses can increase the risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD) many years later. This is of significance to cancer survivors who were treated with radiotherapy in the thorax. Damage to the heart microvasculature is thought to play a key role in development of radiation-induced CVD. The aim of this project was to investigate the effects of radiation on heart microvascular endothelial function using in vitro and in vivo approaches.
