Background: HER2 gene amplification and protein overexpression defined as HER2 positivity (HER2+) breast cancer (BC) is encountered in 15-25% of cases and is characterised by an aggressive behaviour and poor outcome. Despite the high clinical efficacy of anti-HER2 targeted therapy, the response and clinical behaviour of HER2+ tumours is variable. There is evidence indicating that the response of HER2+ BC to anti-HER2 targeted therapy and chemotherapy is related to Oestrogen Receptor (ER) expression.
