Labour has become detached from its traditional values and constituencies without finding new ones. It is at risk of losing large swathes of English voters who reject New Labour's cosmopolitanism and embrace of globalisation. A sense of common life has been destroyed in dispossessed communities, and Labour has not addressed this lack. To reconnect with ordinary people, instead of urging adaptation to the relentless changes demanded by modernity, it must move to embrace more conservative values - based on valuing what is shared in common, rather than a liberalism that promotes individual distinction and difference
