The central nervous system (CNS) consists of a diverse array of neurons and glia. Spatiotemporal specification of NEPs results in the coordinated generation of each cell types. For a given spatial domain, each neuronal subtype arises in a defined order, followed by the differentiation of glia. The retinoid signaling induced six-transmembrane protein GDE2 (Glycerophosphodiester phosphodiesterase 2), which is expressed in postmitotic neurons, plays an important role in the temporal regulation of differentiation of progenitors.
