Description from Mapping Maryland: "Abraham Ortel (1527-98), better know by the Latinized version of his last name, Ortelius, began his career as map colorist and seller. By the 1560s, he had achieved sufficient skills to enable him to prepare his own maps for publication. In 1570 Ortelius published his masterwork, "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum", which is considered the first modern atlas and appeared in forty-two editions. This map, which appeared in the 1601 edition of the "Theatrum...", depicts the realm of Ancient Rome."1 map, colored; 34 x 39 cm.; Scale not given
