This is the 1852 edition of Poppleton’s originally manuscript map of 1822. The following is the description of this map from Mapping Maryland: The Willard Hackerman Collection, published by the Maryland Historical Society, 1998. “ T.H. Poppleton, described in an 1811 issue of the Federal Gazette and Baltimore Daily Advertiser as a “Practical Land Surveyor and Draughtsman,” initiated a survey of the city in 1812. Not until February 1818, however, did the Maryland General Assembly commission the cartographer to print the map. Though not a financially lucrative venture at its first issues, Poppleton’s work underwent subsequent modifications and printings and served as the reference for Baltimore’s physical development until the 1880s.” ...
