This unit is designed to enable the candidate to apply the principles of structural mechanics in order to solve problems related to civil engineering applications. Outcomes • Calculate the support reactions and draw shear force and bending moment diagrams for statically determinate beams. • Analyse, by graphical and mathematical means, statically determinate frames. • Apply the theory of simple bending, shear stress determination and deflection calculations to the analysis of statically determinate beams. • Evaluate combined stresses in structural members and gravity walls and the stability of such walls. • Use computerised techniques to solve structural problems
