Supporting digital technologies in initial teacher education

This resource is an OER produced as part of the Digital Futures in Education (DeFT) project funded as a part of the third phase of the HEA/JISC/UKOER programme. The project's aim was to develop guidance on digital literacy practices in education and the use of OER in teaching and learning.This project involved PGCE tutor Julia Myers and a group of Sheffield Hallam University PGCE students from the 2011/2012 cohort, who were later to become involved as teachers. Julia produced a resource that was designed to be used in initial teacher education (ITE) in university- or school-based training sessions. The PGCE students were asked to review the role of digital technologies in education and later, as newly qualified teachers, to reflect critically on the presentation, value and accessibility of the case studies.\ud The aims of this enquiry were:\ud •To explore the case studies in the context of the newly qualified teachers’ own practice, reviewing and reflecting on the resources for future development\ud •To provide a resource that invites students to reflect on digital literacy issues in their university-based training and to suggest activities/opportunities for extending their experience \ud •To suggest ways in which students' future practice could be supported in ITE and later in schools\ud •To encourage sharing of good practice with digital technologies in a supportive context
