Visual Anthropology CSAPOER

This module is concerned with how anthropology can contribute to - and gain insight from - the analysis of visual forms of representation; it is an introduction to anthropology through an examination of the ‘ways of seeing’ across-cultures and to the methods used for gathering information about other cultures’ ‘visual systems’. The module introduces how different cultures are depicted in a range of media, in particular ethnographic film and photography, and deals with the analytical and ethical issues raised by these representations. It considers how the analysis of art and material culture can be used by the anthropologists to gain insight into cultural forms and values. It also examines how different cultural groups represents themselves, to each other and to outsiders through art, material culture and performance
