This module is concerned with how anthropology can contribute to - and gain insight from - the analysis of visual forms of representation; it is an introduction to anthropology through an examination of the ‘ways of seeing’ across-cultures and to the methods used for gathering information about other cultures’ ‘visual systems’. The module introduces how different cultures are depicted in a range of media, in particular ethnographic film and photography, and deals with the analytical and ethical issues raised by these representations.
