The remains of failed French settlements in the New World embody a unique and complex record of French culture during the dynamic period of the reign of Henry IV. On one hand we see the promotion of exploration, metallurgy, the fur trade and early industry. On the other, recourse was made to classical and medieval systems of defense and military strategy in face of diverse opponents. French occupation of Saint Croix Island lasted only a year, but historians and archaeologists have puzzled over this important settlement for more than two centuries.
