The main objectives of this thesis work were (i) to consider the effects of plantar cutaneous afferents in the mechanisms of postural control, (ii) to examine, in healthy subjects, the effects of low-intensity mechanical stimulation applied under the toes on postural control in orthostatic stance, and (iii) to bring new clinical perspectives in the management of individuals with impaired postural control in a chronic pain condition. A first study considered the foot as a sensory structure playing a key role in the control of orthostatic balance. A second study aimed to review the different modalities used to facilitate sensory cutaneous feedback from the sole of the foot.
