The Detective and the Evidence of Magic in the City: Neo-Victorianism and Urban Fantasy in the Rivers of London

Imagine a world in which magic exists and the legends are true – some of them anyway. This dissertation delves into the universe created by Ben Aaronovitch in his Rivers of London book series, a world in which the action takes place in a plausible version of 21st-century London. The author introduces the creatures – both magical and mundane – that inhabit it and presents London itself as a quasi-protagonist, as well as recounts the adventures of the main character, police officer and wizard’s apprentice Peter Grant, as he navigates London, additionally acquainting readers with relevant bits of city history and many of its landmarks. Since the action takes place in a city in which magical creatures abound and the protagonist is a law enforcement agent who deals with such creatures, this study explores the Rivers of London book series to ascertain whether it is a work of urban fantasy, a police procedural, or both. Because London is home to one of the most archetypical of British detectives, Sherlock Holmes, this analysis compares Peter Grant with Sherlock Holmes both as a person and as a detective. And as London and the River Thames play such an important role in the series, this dissertation analyses them both as mundane features and mystical entities. The series has an undeniable Victorian feel, so this study explores potential Victorian elements contained in the books in order to determine whether it could be considered neo-Victorian or if the imprint of the Victorian age on London and British culture in general is such that it still permeates the works of contemporary authors.Imaginemos um mundo no qual a magia existe e as lendas são reais, algumas pelo menos. Esta dissertação explora o universo criado por Ben Aaronovitch na sua série literária Rivers of London, um mundo em que a ação decorre numa versão verosímil da cidade de Londres no século XXI. Conhecemos as criaturas, tanto mágicas como mundanas, que a habitam e vemos como a própria Londres desempenha um papel de quase-protagonista. Acompanhamos as aventuras da personagem principal, um agente da polícia e aprendiz de feiticeiro, Peter Grant, por Londres e familiarizamo-nos com relevantes factos históricos da cidade e muitos dos seus monumentos. Uma vez que a ação decorre numa cidade repleta de criaturas mágicas e o próprio protagonista é um agente da lei que lida com estas criaturas, a dissertação analisa a série literária Rivers of London para determinar se se trata de uma fantasia urbana, um romance de investigação policial, ou ambos. Como Londres albergou um dos mais paradigmáticos detetives britânicos, Sherlock Holmes, esta dissertação compara Peter Grant com Sherlock Holmes, quer como pessoa, quer como detetive. Dado que Londres e o rio Tamisa desempenham um papel tão importante na série, o estudo analisa as suas características físicas e místicas. Ao ler os livros que integram esta série deteta-se algo inconfundivelmente vitoriano. Nesta dissertação, identificam-se os elementos de vitorianismo contidos na obra para determinar se se pode considerar uma obra neovitoriana ou se a marca deixada pela Era Vitoriana em Londres e na cultura britânica em geral é tal que ainda remanesce nas obras de autores contemporâneos
