This PhD dissertation focuses on the study of Mixed Integer Nonlinear Programming (MINLP) problems [34] for two important and current applications: competitive location on networks [59, 64] and Support Vector Machines (SVM) [56, 152, 153]. Location problems on a network in a competitive environment were first introduced in [82]. They have been deeply studied in operations research and applied in problems such as market area analysis [122], demand estimation [123], or location of retail centres [78]. The SVM has proved to be one of the state-of-the-art methods for Supervised Classification [2, 6, 85, 160].
