Éléments de réflexion sur le statut des notes de terrain: Transcrire les carnets d’Antoine d’Abbadie #1

Billet de blog dans le cadre d'un projet de rechercheFrom 1837 to 1848, Antoine d'Abbadie crisscrossed the Horn of Africa collecting geographical, historical, ethnographic and linguistic information that he copied into notebooks. He will use the data collected during this decade of investigation almost until his death in 1897. However, if the geographical information was processed almost exhaustively and published, the same cannot be said for the whole of his fieldwork, which was partially used by Antoine d'Abbadie himself and then in a fragmentary way by the scientific community. It is the lack of knowledge of these very complete materials that gave rise to a project of digitization, transcription and publication of these notebooks. Conducted within the framework of the BnF's research quarter, this project first questions the status of this abundant source in a very pragmatic way: should the treatment of the information contained in the notebooks be differentiated according to the status they have known? In simpler terms: should we retranscribe and then re-edit information that has already been published and analyzed? The multiplicity of cases shows that each of them must be examined, and that the notion of primary source reveals all its complexity in the case of field notes.De 1837 à 1848, Antoine d’Abbadie sillonne la Corne de l’Afrique en collectant des informations de nature géographiques, historiques, ethnographiques ou encore linguistiques qu’il recopie dans des carnets. Il va exploiter les données collectées pendant cette décennie d’enquête quasiment jusqu’à sa mort en 1897. Pourtant, si les informations de nature géographique furent traitées quasi-exhaustivement et publiées, il n’en est pas de même pour l’ensemble de son travail de terrain qui fut partiellement utilisé par Antoine d’Abbadie lui-même puis de manière fragmentaire par la communauté scientifique. C’est le manque de connaissance de ces matériaux très complets, anciens et difficilement exploitables qui a donné naissance à un projet de numérisation, transcription et édition de ces carnets.Mené dans le cadre du quardiennal de la recherche de la BnF, ce projet interroge d’abord le statut de cette source foisonnante de manière très pragmatique : faut-il différencier le traitement des informations contenues dans les carnets en fonction des statuts qu’elles ont connus ? En termes plus simples : faut-il retranscrire puis ré-éditer des informations qui ont déjà été publiées et analysées ? La multiplicité des cas montre qu’il faut examiner chacun d’entre eux, et que la notion de source première révèle toute sa complexité dans le cas des notes de terrain
