The hyoid bone is an important anatomical landmark for the tongue and for the localization of the larynx. Its position allows us to infer the position of the vocal folds and so of one of the extremities of the vocal tract. It is for this reason that the hyoid bone plays a key role in the debate on the emergence of speech. The hyoid bone is unique in that it is not directly attached to any other bone in the skeleton. It is always in movement, depending on mastication, respiration, deglutition, swallowing, and production of speech. Our goal was to determine what reference plane was most appropriate for predicting the position of the hyoid bone: a cranial reference plane or a mandibular reference plan. We used xeroradiographic and radiographic data of speakers uttering sustained vowels to build our training data. Our results corroborate Granat and Peyre's proposition (2005). The mean position of the hyoid bone is located on a parallel plane defined by the Merkel plane at the level of the gnathion. To illustrate this result, we applied our prediction to four modern skulls belonging to four different populations chosen for a certain diversity of world skull morphology: Toucouleur from West Africa, Egyptian of the Libyan desert, Asian from Mongolia, and Australian and Tasmanian, to which we added a famous Neandertal Man, La Ferrassie These results were adopted to reconstruct the vocal tract of fossil Men and to predict their ability to produce speech.L'os hyoïde constitue un point de repère anatomique important de la disposition de la langue et du larynx. Sa localisation permet d'inférer la position des cordes vocales et donc l'une des extrémités du conduit vocal qui n'est délimité, pour l'essentiel, que par des parties molles. La détermination de la position de cet os par rapport à l'architecture de la tête et du cou est donc importante dans le débat sur les capacités de production de la parole des Hommes fossiles. Dès la formation du fœtus, jusqu'à la fin de la croissance, l'os hyoïde est étroitement lié au développement de tout un ensemble osseux par rapport auquel il est situé et à celui du réseau musculaire qui s'insère sur lui. Ses relations musculaires et cartilagineuses, avec la langue, la mandibule et le larynx, le sollicitent en permanence tant pour la respiration, la déglutition qu'au cours de la production de la parole : il est en permanence en mouvement. Notre problématique a porté sur le choix d'un repère (mandibulaire et/ou crânien) permettant de d'estimer, le plus précisément possible, une position moyenne de l'os hyoïde. Les données d'apprentissage ont été constituées à partir de xéroradiographies et de radiographies de locuteurs actuels prononçant des voyelles soutenues qui permettent de fixer la position des articulateurs. Les résultats corroborent la proposition faite par Granat et Peyre (2005) pour localiser la position de l'os hyoïde : il se situe bien, en moyenne, sur une parallèle au plan de Merkel passant par le menton. Pour illustration, la prédiction est appliquée à quatre crânes morphologiquement bien différents (égyptien, mongol, toucouleur, australien) et à l'Homme de La Ferrassie. L'étape suivante de ce travail va consister à reconstruire les conduits vocaux des Hommes fossiles et à en évaluer les capacités acoustiques de production de la parole
