Bei der Enuresis nocturna, einem der häufigsten Symptome des Kindesalters, liegt eine hochkomplexe, differenzierte Interaktion von somatischen und psychiatrischen Faktoren vor. Es können eine isolierte, (monosymptomatische), eine symptomatische (mit Miktionsauffälligkeiten) und eine sekundäre (nach einem trockenen Intervall) Enuresis nocturna unterschieden werden. Trotz des klinisch nachweisbaren tiefen Schlafes ist die Schlafarchitektur nicht verändert und die Einnässepisoden treten in jedem Schlafstadium ohne urodynamische Auffälligkeiten auf.
