Self-concept and anxiety-performance-relation in ability testing situations at local employment offices: A study concerning the deficit-model of test anxiety

Ausgehend vom Defizit-Modell der Testangst, wonach eine negative Angst-Leistung-Relation aus erlebter Inkompetenz während der Testbearbeitung resultiert, wird die Bedeutung des Selbstkonzepts untersucht. Angenommen wird, dass Besorgtheit als maßgebliche Komponente der Testangstreaktion dann prägnanter vorhergesagt werden kann, wenn neben der Testleistung auch das Selbstkonzept der Begabung erhoben wird. Im Rahmen von psychologischen Berufseignungsuntersuchungen wurden im Zusammenhang mit einem reasoning-Test (Raven SPM) die Angstreaktionen von N = 279 Untersuchungsteilnehmern erfasst sowie vorher Eigenschaftsangst und aufgabenspezifisches Selbstkonzept der Begabung. Mithilfe einer hierarchischen Regressionsanalyse konnte gezeigt werden, dass die Interaktion zwischen Selbstkonzept und Testleistung nach Eigenschaftsangst und Selbstkonzept tatsächlich als ein bedeutsamer Prädiktor für die Besorgtheitsreaktion anzusehen ist und mehr an Varianz aufklärt als die Leistungsvariable allein. Erklärungsmöglichkeiten liegen in der Spezifität der Testsituation.Regarding the negative anxiety-performance relation as a consequence following the perception of ones deficits during a test situation (deficit-model), the meaninig of self-concept is investigated. It is supposed, that worry, building the central component of test anxiety, can be predicted much better by measuring academic self-concept as well as test performance. N = 279 subjects undergoing psychological ability testings at local employment offices were collected with respect to trait anxiety, academic self-concept and test anxiety. Performance was measured by a computerized version of the Standard Progressive Matrices SPM. Results of stepwise regression analysis show the interaction between academic self-concept and performance accounting for more of the worry variance as performance only. Beyond trait anxiety and academic self-concept the interaction term is seen as an important predictor of the worry reaction. Reasons could be found in the specifity of the given test situation
