This article presents the tumultuous story of the Romanian Department at the Pázmány Péter University (later Eötvös Loránd University) in Budapest in the aftermath of the Second World War. For this purpose, it follows the intricate connections between political regime changes, and personal feuds, ideologies, as well as the impact of trends and vogues in historical and philological research on the institutional and research agenda of this department. The study focuses particularly on major personalities connected to the department and the Hungarian-Romanian Association, such as Lajos Tamás and László Gáldi
