Thesis (MScMedSc)--Stellenbosch University, 2021.Background and Introduction: The early initiation of combined antiretroviral therapy (cART) in children has proved to significantly reduce the morbidity and mortality rate associated with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection. However, even though cART can reduce plasma viral loads to being clinically undetectable, it does not cure HIV-1 infection due to the presence of a latent reservoir where HIV-1 persists as integrated, replication-competent proviruses.
