Medical implants play a central role in modern medicine and both, naturally derived and synthetic materials have been explored as biomaterials for such devices. However, when implanted into living tissue, most materials initiate a host response. In addition, implants often cause bacterial infections leading to complications. Polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) coatings can be used for functionalization of medical implants improving the implant integration and reducing foreign body reactions. Some PEMs are also known to show antibacterial properties.
