Patterning of the Drosophila eggshell requires the induction of dorsal fates in the follicular epithelium of the ovary, which will secrete this eggshell. These fates are induced by the localized activation of epidermal growth factor (Egfr) signaling mediated by its localized ligand Gurken (Grk), which restricts the acquisition of dorsal fates to the dorsal anterior domain of the epithelium. The generation of the complex pattern of fates along the dorsal-ventral (DV) axis has been proposed to be generated by the induction of a second round of Egfr signaling in the follicular epithelium by the late Grk-Egfr signaling.
