Mercury is one of the most toxic environmental pollutants of global concern. Understanding transformation pathways among various mercury species is critical for predicting the fate, transport and potential toxicity of mercury to the ecosystems. The purpose of this research was to advance our knowledge on the photochemical reactions of oxidized mercury species with selected organic molecules by performing kinetic and product studies at near environmental conditions. The reduction of Hg2+ by small, semi-volatile dicarboxylic acids was the first to be investigated.
