This inquiry sought to examine the effects of participating in an online discussion forum on the development of knowledge for teaching mathematics. The participants of this study were among the pre-service teachers from a large urban university, chosen as they were completing their mathematics pedagogy course in their teacher-education program and entering a field experience for that academic year. A qualitative analysis of the online discussions of my participants was done under the framework of communities of practice (Wenger, 1998) and Ball et.al's (2008) understanding of the knowledge for teaching mathematics.
