Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is characterized by the autoimmune destruction of the insulin producing beta cells of the pancreas. Linkage with Type 1 Diabetes has been reported on chromosome 2q31-33. Within this 23 cM interval, T1D association with CTLA4 polymorphisms has been localized to a linkage disequilibrium (LD) block covering the D2S72- CTLA4-D2S116 interval. Within this interval, T1D is associated with a haplotype in the CTLA4 gene, containing several potentially functional polymorphisms.
