This dissertation focuses on learning how to control the physico-chemical properties of multilayer thin films containing weak polyelectrolytes by gaining an understanding of the films from a fundamental perspective. This information is then used, as a proof of principle concept, to assemble films with desired properties for a model application. Multilayer thin films were prepared using the layer-by-layer deposition technique, which involves the sequential adsorption of oppositely charged polymers onto a charged substrate from dilute aqueous solutions.
