Children with poor social adjustment are at risk for a number of maladaptive outcomes in adolescence and adulthood, such as psychopathology, conduct problems, and substance abuse. Social information processing (SIP) theory consists of six distinct but interrelated steps through which individuals process and respond to incoming social information. The ability of individuals to accurately process social information at all six steps has been used to predict aspects of social adjustment such as aggression and social skills.
