The thesis provides a new approach to the codesign of digital systems. Complex systems tend to have mixed hardware-software components and are often subject to severe cost, performance, and design-time constraints. Our approach is to codesign these systems. The codesign approach allows the hardware and software designs to be tightly coupled throughout the design process. We focus on three key problems of system modeling, system analysis and system hardware-software partitioning.A key contribution of the thesis is to use hierarchy as it is available in modeling tools to handle complex system models but also during the codesign process to provide different modeling alternatives for the same input system.
