Abstract In this thesis I will explore the figure and configuration of women in twentieth century Chinese cinema. I begin my investigation by establishing a more general understanding of how the cinema, as a structure of modernity, functions in relation to the formation of modern subjectivity, sensibility, and everyday life. I then narrow my investigation to the evolution of the cinema in the specific context of twentieth century China. In so doing, I establish how the evolution of the cinema and the figure and configuration of women developed in relation to the forging a new national identity.
